Brooch by Silvia Walz

Unique piece

The Eugénie brooch refers to Eugénie de Montijo (1826–1920), Empress of the French as the wife of Napoleon III and the last monarch of France. Remembered in the memoirs of Jean Cocteau as a striking and unconventional presence in her later years, she appears both authoritative and fragile, austere yet theatrical. The gesture of pinning a flower to a lapel, once an imperial act of distinction, becomes a quiet symbol of dignity retained beyond power.

In Walz’s interpretation, Eugénie emerges as a condensed historical character, balancing strength, irony and vulnerability. The brooch functions as both adornment and narrative object, carrying a layered story of identity, authority and time.

Title: Eugénie

Materials: Lapizlazuli, copper, enamel, perspex, silver, steel, horn
