Brooch by Silvia Walz

Unique piece

The Amrita brooch refers to Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941), the influential modernist painter of Indian and Hungarian heritage. Recognised early for her exceptional talent, she studied in Paris before returning to India, where she developed a distinctive artistic language rooted in Indian cultural identity while engaging with European modernism. Her career was intense but brief, ending prematurely at the age of 28, shortly before a major solo exhibition.

Walz’s interpretation reflects both the cosmopolitan background and the creative independence associated with Sher-Gil. The brooch evokes artistic sensitivity, cultural dialogue and the enduring presence of a visionary artist whose legacy continues to resonate.
