This is Peter Bauhuis
Peter Bauhuis is a German artist whose work moves fluidly between jewellery, sculpture, and conceptual object-making. Trained as a jeweller yet never confined by the discipline’s borders, Bauhuis has developed a distinctive visual language in which material becomes metaphor and process becomes storytelling. His pieces—ranging from delicate vessels to enigmatic wearable forms—often emerge from experimental casting techniques that reveal the alchemy, unpredictability, and quiet humour embedded in his practice.
Based in Munich, Bauhuis studied at the Staatliche Zeichenakademie in Hanau before completing his Diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, in 1999—the same year he opened his own studio. Since then, his oeuvre has expanded into a multifaceted constellation: autonomous objects, jewellery, artist books, and immersive exhibition environments that function as artworks in their own right. His approach consistently challenges expectations, inviting viewers into a world where material behaviour, narrative invention, and sculptural presence intertwine.
His work has been celebrated internationally, with distinctions including the Bavarian State Award (2011, 2023), the Danner Prize of Honour, the Friedrich Becker Prize, and the Grand Prize of the 17th Silver Triennial in Hanau. In 2020, he was shortlisted for the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, further cementing his position in contemporary craft and metalwork.
Bauhuis’ jewellery and vessels are held in major public collections worldwide, including Die Neue Sammlung in Munich, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Te Papa Tongarewa in New Zealand, and the Fonds national d’art contemporain in Paris, among others.
Across decades of exhibitions, workshops, and residencies—from Munich to Melbourne, Jerusalem to Christchurch—Bauhuis has continuously expanded the possibilities of contemporary metalwork. His practice is a vivid reminder that craft can be both playful and profound: rigorously researched yet poetically open-ended. In every piece, he invites us to look closer—and to embrace the unexpected.
