Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, McCaig studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee before earning her Master of Arts in Jewelry from The Royal College of Art in London. After establishing her printmaking workshop in London, she relocated to Barcelona in 1991, where she continues to live and work.

Her work has been exhibited internationally in major galleries and museums and is represented in numerous public and private collections — a testament to her enduring influence on the field of contemporary jewelry.
